Stijn Valentijn
The process of creating art is an extension of nature and evolution itself. With a background in both Biology and Fine Art, Stijn Valentijn approaches his work as a continuation of natural processes. By following intuition, we form new combinations. Through error and surprise, we arrive at the unexpected. Through selection, we decide what remains.
Valentijn explores our connection to nature by examining our own nature. He takes on the roles of both creator and adventurer. Like a modern-day Darwin, he searches for new life forms and the relationships between them.
His world is rich in color and humor, yet carries a critical undertone. Recurring themes include nature’s fluidity, human influence, and the celebration of diversity. Through simple, recognizable shapes, Valentijn seeks to develop a universal visual language. Repeated elements like bees, chickens, eggs, and flowers become symbolic, forming a cohesive system of signs.
“There are many similarities to ancient art forms and scripts,” Valentijn notes. “I believe this reflects an inherent human need to simplify, to return to geometric basics. Simple forms hold the most associations, and therefore come closer to truth, allowing for multiple interpretations from different perspectives.”
His work invites us to see the beauty and essence of nature. When we avoid being blinded by the details, we can recognize the beauty that lies clearly on nature’s surface and accept our connection to it by embracing its subtle imperfections.
